Teaching and Learning

High-quality teaching and learning are at the heart of everything we do. They have a direct impact on pupils’ attainment and outcomes by ensuring that knowledge is clearly explained, well-practised, and securely understood over time. Through structured lessons, effective support, and appropriate challenge, pupils can make strong progress and achieve their best. By creating engaging and supportive classrooms, we not only improve academic results but also build confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Marking and Feedback

At Gospel Oak, we believe that feedback is one of the most powerful tools for learning. It helps students understand what they are doing well, identify areas to improve, and take clear steps to achieve their best. It also guides teachers to adapt lessons and support students effectively.
Students receive regular feedback, which may a teacher written comment, live feedback, verbal, or shared with the whole class. They also receive follow-up tasks to help close gaps in knowledge and skills.

  • Year 10 and 11 & Year 12 and 13: Twice per half term, plus on summative assessments (these are larger tests or pieces of work that measure overall understanding).
  • Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 Core Subjects: Once per half term.
  • Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 Non-Core Subjects: Once per term.

Our tiered feedback system ensures guidance meets each student’s needs:

  • Tier 1: Short, immediate feedback.
  • Tier 2: 20–30-minute reflection and practice activities.
  • Tier 3: In-depth feedback with a redraft or reattempt.

This approach helps students take ownership of their learning, make real progress, and build independence, while teachers tailor support effectively.

Adaptive Teaching

Adaptive teaching means that lessons are carefully designed to meet the needs of all pupils, so every child can succeed. Teachers adjust their explanations, resources, and support to help pupils who need more guidance, while also providing challenge for those ready to go further. This approach ensures that no pupil is left behind and that everyone is supported to make strong progress. By responding to pupils’ understanding in real time, adaptive teaching helps build confidence, deepen knowledge, and enable all learners to achieve their full potential.
